Gramps (Not Responding)

I have the latest update for Gramps and I’m using Linux.

I attempted to create an “End of Line” document and Gramps immediately ceased to respond. Does anyone know how I can get around this? I’m really wanting to flesh out missing sections of my tree, but I am trying to figure out where I have missing people, in order to get started!

Thank you for your time.

That dialog appears on long processes where there is no progress bar dialog.

It is frustrating because it is probably making progress … but there is no way to tell if it is truly stuck and ‘not responding’.

And I’ve found that when my Fedora starts to hit the 80% Memory used range, the swap file use goes through the roof. Then the ‘not responding’ dialog becomes overbearing.

Do you see that when it first starts and it’s just an immediate “not responding” and the whole box turns lighter?

No. My end of line report runs pretty quickly. Have you checked the integrity of your tree? Such as running the Tools → Utilities → Find database loop

But my tree is running only 1,418 individuals:

Breakdown by generation:
     Generation 1 has 1 of 1 individual (100.00% complete)
     Generation 2 has 2 of 2 individuals (100.00% complete)
     Generation 3 has 4 of 4 individuals (100.00% complete)
     Generation 4 has 8 of 8 individuals (100.00% complete)
     Generation 5 has 16 of 16 individuals (100.00% complete)
     Generation 6 has 32 of 32 individuals (100.00% complete)
     Generation 7 has 55 of 64 individuals (85.94% complete)
     Generation 8 has 89 of 128 individuals (69.53% complete)
     Generation 9 has 115 of 256 individuals (44.92% complete)
     Generation 10 has 168 of 512 individuals (32.81% complete)
     Generation 11 has 208 of 1024 individuals (20.31% complete)
     Generation 12 has 180 of 2048 individuals (8.79% complete)
     Generation 13 has 154 of 4096 individuals (3.76% complete)
     Generation 14 has 108 of 8192 individuals (1.32% complete)
     Generation 15 has 83 of 16384 individuals (0.51% complete)
     Generation 16 has 63 of 32768 individuals (0.19% complete)
     Generation 17 has 45 of 65536 individuals (0.07% complete)
     Generation 18 has 41 of 131072 individuals (0.03% complete)
     Generation 19 has 10 of 262144 individuals (0.00% complete)
     Generation 20 has 9 of 524288 individuals (0.00% complete)
     Generation 21 has 8 of 1048576 individuals (0.00% complete)
     Generation 22 has 7 of 2097152 individuals (0.00% complete)
     Generation 23 has 8 of 4194304 individuals (0.00% complete)
     Generation 24 has 4 of 8388608 individuals (0.00% complete)
All generations have 1418 individuals

It created an 86-page “End of Line” document

Mine has over 20,000. That’s where I think the issue is. I haven’t found a program yet than can handle everything without some sort of an issue.

Is that 20k of direct ancestors or everyone?

My tree has 51,461 people. Only 1,418 are direct ancestors. But the report generated to 86 pages in less than 5 seconds.

Direct ancestors, unless they double as other, lol. I only keep siblings if they are also someone I am descended from in another part of the tree…I’ve been doing this for awhile. Long enough that I started going back through it this year looking for errors so that I could make it more accurate.

I’ve found 3 places that I’ve fixed so far. Thankfully, even though one section was wrong on each of those spots, it was still correct further on.

That instant “not responding” sounds like you may have some loops.

Please try running the tool mentioned above.

Just ran it. It didn’t find anything.

Try changing your starting Person. Change the active person to each of your grandparents in turn and re-run the report.

If the ancestors are equally distributed, that should cut the Ancestor count by 75% for each run. So 5,000 ancestors instead of 20,000 per report.

Sounds logical, I’ll try that next!
