Family Circles Poster - New chart visualization type for use with GEDCOM

Here’s another example of using different types of lines. (And maybe another inspiration for a 3D visualization, using time or generations as the vertical axis.)

Saw that Family Circles Diagram a while back but my impression was that it was superficially pretty but contextually muddled. You think it is something useful but it turns out to be too abstract.

Perhaps if the relationship lines had some weighting/tension that affected the organization?

The 2D animated visualization that @dsblank posted in 2011 of the Gramps Development History has such weightings. And having some of the data translated to an additional time dimension seems to have potential.

Creator of the Family Circles diagram here. Feel free to provide more detail about your thoughts on this. These diagrams are meant to be printed, so the considerations are fairly different than for viewing on a computer. Relationship distance is indicated by how close people are to the focus person in the centre (and also by how the size of the profile), so I’m not sure how what attribute/factor you are suggesting be used for line weight.

I’m all for other types of visualizations as well.

@emyoulation suggested I post this as a new topic…

Family Circles are a new type of family tree visualization that shows all types of relatives of a specified person(s), not just ancestors or descendants. It’s meant to better show living relatives, and to be printed on (large) paper. While it’s not available as a gramplet at this point, it can be used with a GEDCOM file.

If anyone tries it out, I’d be happy to hear your thoughts.
