Crusader Kings (commercial game) and Gramps

Ran across an interesting post on Reddit that lead back to Gramps: " should i play this game as an autistic person with a hyperfixation on family trees? i seriously have a weird fascination with family trees…"

This lead to discovering that “this game” was a commercial game called Crusader Kings (versions 1 through 4) that are sort of like Civilization but for building dynastic empires. And some people are using genealogy tools to visualize the data to help their strategic gameplay.

And there are Modding tools. One of which includes a (somewhat convoluted) workflow that imports the data into Gramps. Another is a “GEDCOM to CK3 converter

Some people have too much free time.

The interesting thing about “gamification” is that is usually leads to innovations in data analysis, visualizations and interface. And performance advances too.

Although I’m not a gamer, I prefer the idea of people competing in games about building a society or strategy than 1st person shooting or mass annihilation. Even when the game does encourage developing their Machiavellian skillset.
