Tex files and how to view them

I have loaded various add-ons and have tried to create reports from REPORTS > TREES which creates a report with a “.tex” LaTeX file format. I have downloaded TeXworks and LEd and open the reports and can see the script of the report but cannot compile them to pdf documents.

Can anyone suggest an alternative to view the reports or tricks for viewing in these program?

GRAMPS: GrampsAIO64-5.1.3-2
Python: 3.6.4 (default, Jan 23 2018, 13:17:37) …
BSDDB: 6.1.0 (6, 0, 30)
sqlite: 3.21.0 (2.6.0)
LANG: en_GB.UTF-8
OS: Windows

Check out the Prerequisites page and in particular what is needed for Windows.

Once you have MiKTeX installed, when you go to generate the report with the output to LaTex, make sure you have the Open with default viewer checked. After Gramps creates its output file, Miktex will open and there will be a Green arrow in the upper left of the window. Pressing that icon will cause the creation of the actual viewable report.

It has been awhile since I did the install and cannot remember if there is anything I missed.

Did a reinstall to the most recent Miktex version.

You will want to experiment with custom paper sizes and orientations to get proper outputs.

I have not used TeXWorks but if you have it installed try the same steps using the Open with default viewer and the same Green Arrow that MikTex has. If they have similar design they probably do the same thing (or not).

I have got it to work however if I create a report with 6 generation in Ancestor Tree I get the following message:

! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [main memory size=3000000].

Have you every experienced this issue and known how to increase the capacity. I have Googled but cannot find a simple solution to the issue.

Thanks
Les

I too got an error at 6 generations for Ancestor Tree. I am using the MikTex install.

Error Message…
If you really absolutely need more capacity, you can ask a wizard to enlarge me.

Here is how much of TeX’s memory you used:
27627 strings out of 478927
588793 string characters out of 2852534
3000001 words of memory out of 3000000
45157 multiletter control sequences out of 15000+600000
624823 words of font info for 230 fonts, out of 8000000 for 9000
1141 hyphenation exceptions out of 8191
115i,9n,122p,524b,7897s stack positions out of 5000i,500n,10000p,200000b,80000
! ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

In truth, I am not a user of these reports so have never encountered this error.

Maybe another user has had some experience with it.

You mentioned that you did not find a solution via Google, but I’m not sure which solutions you tried. I don’t use TeX now, but have vague memories of this error from uni days and the steps in this blog entry ring a bell. Try steps 1-5 and let us know how it goes.

@codefarmer. Is there supposed to be a link in your response?

Yes, there was a link in the message but email-to-Discourse gateway seems to strip out stuff. Here’s the blog I was referring to:

Hope it helps.

Thanks

Tried that and some work and some did not. Ancestor report worked with 4 generations but with 6 got

For the Descendants it exceeded the 12,000,000 so I image it is just a matter of increasing that figure.
