Gramps 5.1.6, Linux mint 22.2 Cinnamon. New to forum so sorry if correct protocol not observed and if topic has been covered elsewhere. In Narrated Web Site report posted to internet (or elsewhere in Gramps) is there any way to change relationship descriptors from husband/wife to partner or spouse? I have a couple of same sex relationships in my tree and the husband/wife descriptors just don’t describe the relationship properly. Thanks in advance,
Looking at the display_spouse method in the code, the term “Partner” will only be used if the relationship is not a marriage or the gender of the spouse is either unknown or other than male or female.

Many thanks for your prompt reply but as the song says “The Times They Are A-changin’”. Are there any plans to update this given the increasing incidences of same sex marriages where there is an actual marriage, and the sex of the participants is known, i.e, two males or two females, and where the people involved consider themselves to be “partners” or “spouses” rather than the more gender specific and role defining “husband” and “wife’? A feature request, perhaps?
Yes, a feature request is a good idea.
We should also ask @SNoiraud for his opinion.
I have a few same gender marriages/couples. If they have a marriage (civil and/or religious) I set the Family type as Married. This gives them Husband/Husband or Wife/Wife in the NarrWeb which is appropriate. If the couple are not married then they get Partner/Partner for all genders.
The one hack I have made (which so far has never been needed) is to change a Married partner with a gender other than Male/female to use the term “Spouse”. Spouse has a legal significance greater than “Partner”.
if reltype == FamilyRelType.MARRIED:
if gender == Person.FEMALE:
relstr = self._("Wife")
elif gender == Person.MALE:
relstr = self._("Husband")
else:
relstr = self._("Spouse")
else:
relstr = self._("Partner")
When you have same sex marriage, what do we do ?
I have all these cases in my genealogy.
In gramps 6.0 we already have:
if reltype == FamilyRelType.MARRIED:
if gender == Person.FEMALE:
relstr = self._("Wife")
elif gender == Person.MALE:
relstr = self._("Husband")
else:
relstr = self._("Partner")
else:
relstr = self._("Partner")
My experience is that same-sex married couple do use the terms husband or wife when referring to each other and to others. One member of the couple introducing “The is my husband”, “This is my wife” to others. Granted, my experience is also limited to same-sex couples that both identify themselves as both male or both female.
