Using Windows 10 Pro 22H2 64-bit and Gramps AIO64-6.0.0–1
I am a brand new user of Gramps, but I’ve been doing genealogy for 15+ years with Ancestry, Family Tree Maker, and Family Tree Analyzer.
I’ve imported a GEDCOM from Ancestry to Gramps. I would like to populate the Places Tree hierarchy based on my Places entries. There are 9800+ entries.
I am working my way through the tutorials and tried looking at the Place Completion tool, but am more confused than ever.
Is there a tutorial on how to use the Place Completion tool? I’ve started manually linking US states to USA, but there has to be a better way.
Family Tree Analyzer has a geocoding mechanism that attempts to assign latitude/longitude and a Country/State/County/City hierarchy. Is there something similar in Gramps?
Note the support page for the Place completion tool addon shows ( This tool is of limited use for Gramps 5.x series. Please read the Issues section. You should consider using the Place Cleanup Gramplet instead. ) so please uninstall the Place Completion tool and install the Place Cleanup Gramplet addon, have a read of the support page and if you have any questions on usage not covered, please ask here.
Please follow the advice of backing up your current family tree BEFORE using any tool that automates data entry or editing.
The PlaceTool addon gramplet from the Isotammi project allows a set of bread-crumbed Places (e.g.; “Village, township, county, state, country”) to be broken out into the hierarchical structure. And their MultiMerge has an Automerge that can handle duplicate place reduction.
Their tools come from years of managing the collation of research by genealogists working independently.
Another interesting tool when building out your place hierarchy is the Import Text gramplet.
(I’ve deleted your screen capture since it included sensitive account information.)
If you have multiple screens, I suggest undocking the Gramplet to keep it accessible while you’re cleaning the hierarchy. (see the Sidebar and Bottombar wiki section for how to dock, undock and re-locate Gramplets between splitbars.)
