No apparent way to begin a tree

Just opened a new Gramps file. There is no apparent way to start entering people.

This is something that is frequently discussed and is highly contended.

My current suggestion is that we ought to add an updated What’s Next? gramplet to the core gramplets and make it one of the default Gramplets.

There is a Beta What’s Next? that has been proposed in the addons collection for feedback. (You can add it to your downloads with the Addon Manager ) Then add it to the Dashboard.

When there is no tree loaded, it shows this:

After a new tree is created and loaded, it shows this:

Options become more visible once the tree is seeded. But you’re right. They are completely non-apparent to the first time user.

Try this tutorial:

Other videos on that channel might also help you:

  1. obtain genealogy software from somebody else.
  2. enter a person into newly obtained genealogy software.
  3. export data to .ged file
  4. import data to Gramps
  5. Done?

The 2 ways people begin using Gramps are:

  1. start from scratch
  2. import data

Either way, users start by creating a blank Tree and loading it. (It is like the File ‐> New Document in a word processor.)

So the tips cover both … without judgement.

By the way, people might start with an importing an addressbook from their smart phone or favorite eMail system. (Not just another genealogy tool.) Then start connecting those Persons together as families.

But I think the easiest way to start from scratch (after loading a new blank Tree) is by Edit ‐> Add Family. It presents a familiar framework. So that is the process described in the Beta What’s Next? gramplet.

But the Data Entry addon gramplet is an excellent tool for roughing in a tree by hand.

Another good starting point is with the FamilyTreeView (FTV) gramplet as it provides prompts to get you going:

Of course the big problem with that approach is that FTV doesn’t appear in the Addon Manager unless you have added it via the ‘Projects’ tab of the Addon Manager, which is not something a Gramps newbie is going to know about.
