Make Active Media versus "preferred" Gallery object

(GrampsAIO64-5.1.3-2, Windows 11)

I have loaded 4 photos in ‘Gallery’ for a person. They are in date order. The system uses the first photo as the ‘Active’ photo that appears in the Image box for that person. I would like to use the 2nd photo as the ‘Active’ photo. I click on the 2nd photo and then right click and select ‘Make Active Media’ but the image does not change on the person. Have closed the person edit screen and reselected but still it has not made the 2nd photo the ‘Active’ photo (media). Any suggestion?

That Make Active Media option is making it the Active (selected) object in the Media category rather than the preferred media object in the Gallery. (Changing the active media object is about navigating the focus of the Gramplets, menus, and Toolbar buttons in the Media category.)

You need to “re-order” the Media objects in the Gallery tab.

Simply drag the desired Gallery object to the first position in the Gallery tab of the object editor.

The ← Move Left and → Move Right buttons were added to the Gallery toolbar in the Gramps 5.1 update with PR781. These buttons provided an alternative to drag’n’drop. Select the Media Object in the Gallery and click the ← Move Left button until the desired thumbnail is leftmost.

Drag the first picture to the last position. The first picture is the one that shows as the profile picture.

Thanks for the info. I was aware of being able to move the media order. I was hoping that there was a way to have the media in the chronological order but select other than the 1st media as the ‘image’.

Cheers

You can do that. Place the image you wish to maintain as the display image on the left side of the Gallery. Then place all the other images on chrono order left to right. When you get to the spot in the chronology where your display image would be located, put in a duplicate copy of the display image.

David1, Thanks for the suggestion. Is a solutions but would be nice to be able to select which media goes in the image but that is a wish list as I am more than happy with the software and are greatly thankful to everyone that works on the program.

You can only do what you want with the Family Tree View addon. You must define an attribute like “Prefered profile picture” and associate it to the displayed profile picture in preferences of that view (and to the reference to the media for the image you want to appear on the Family Tree View)
