Geonames.org is very useful to have id’s linked to places. How can it be used? can it be used to autocomplete my place, e.g. only filling in a geonames.org id and have name/lon/lat etc autocompleted?
Gramps seems to be evolving to store Person IDs from other Genealogical Software in order to simplify Merging updates.
Perhaps the same system could be used for GeoName IDs, GNIS, or IDs from other competing systems, and What3Words locations as alternatives to lat/long coordinates.
I like that my GeoNames harmonized Place data has a recognizable ID that differentiates them from Gramps auto-assigned IDs. But it seems like we’re adopting a standard without exploring the downsides, if any.
