Gramps Web Families Collaboration

Starting with my setup, I’ve just installed the latest version of Gramps Web from Gramps Web | Proxmox VE Helper Scripts and run it on my homelab, an old pc with proxmox.

It’s publish on the internet with a domain for the family to access it.

Just to let you know using this installation method is a breeze, updates are great and simple and i was able to get GrampsWeb up and running in no time.

Now going to the real point while exploring GrampsWeb.

My greatest expectation was that, being a web based gramps, and being able to share it the family (and larger family, meaning the other families connected by marriage) that I would be able to get help while updating the family tree.

And that is true for the first, my, family. I managed to find three people who are more tech savvy and I trust that won’t deleted the entire family tree by mistake or unknowingly doing some wrong operations.

But there are other families, and some people of those other families, that i already registered in the tree.

For those i’d like to specify that in that family branch/line, person a,b and c re the managers, and that they would be allowed to manage that family.

Is this, or all this be possible in GrampsWeb ?

If you think it’s an ideia or feature request let me know and i’ll register it as i believe this would bring massive collaboration to GrampsWeb family trees.

Hi,

glad that Gramps is working well for you so far!

What you describe is well motivated and it would definitely great to have, but it’s quite challenging to do technically, which is why it hasn’t been implemented in Gramps Web so far.

There is an open feature requests that discusses this: Improve Contributor Role · Issue #754 · gramps-project/gramps-web-api · GitHub

In practice, we first need to implement fine-grained permissions for read-only users, which is tracked in this separate feature request: Limit access for user to main person and relatives · Issue #597 · gramps-project/gramps-web-api · GitHub

So it will take quite a while until what you describe will be possible.

In the meantime, my pragmatic recommendation is that, if you have relatives who you trust to edit one branch and nothing else, just tell them so. The worst that can happen is that they ignore your request and edit something else, but you’ll always be able to tell afterwards because of the revision view. And each change they do can be undone with a single click. When that happens for the first time, give them a warning; when it happens for the second time, remove their edit rights. I’m pretty sure this will work in practice!

PS: our revision view really needs more filters to be more usable, but that’s something that’s much easier to implement and I’m sure it will happen soon.

Thank you very much for your fast and honest reply.

Although I’m sad that this feature is far away i understand the effort required to implement it.

Nevertheless i’d like to sate again that i believe this will be a major feature for GrampsWeb if or when it comes to life.

It’ll allow several people to interact in the tree and make it a big one, and will promote collaboration and contact within the families.

Thanks for your great work and effort and hope to be able to contribute somehow in the future.

Best Regards,

Pete

I don’t have any experience with multi family trees in Gramps Web.
But if user permissions is per family tree, then having each family branch in its own tree could be a workaround.

My point was that I don’t think this impossible now - it’s not enforced by permissions, but it can be audited. This exact use case was a major motivation for introducing the possibility to selectively undo individual edits by any contributor.

I appreciate the suggestion and maybe will try that, however i don’t imagine it’ll produce the same gratifying effect of someone viewing and searching family in the complete big tree and wanting to contribute to his own branch.

Also it could lead to the unknowingly registration of the same families in each tree making them redundant as each tree does not know what is registered in the other tree.

That would not make an ancient and big family tree, but several separate trees, it could work if there was one easy way of joining them in the future.

Of course although this could also be worked defining rules and with some coordination, perhaps it could work, but in my opinion is far from being workable with.

I prefer to search and test other solutions or keep using my single user FamilyTree software and search and update for myself the family info, with the marriages, divorces, births and deaths.

Currently the problem to solve, for me, it’s not the software functionality, as gramps is good and gramps web too, it’s the data, and how many can search and update it, so as i said is the collaboration to register the data.

Thank you for your feedback and suggestion anyway as i appreciate anyones disposition to help other fellow users.

Thanks,

Pete

Understood and thank you for the clarification.

It is a way of course and may be one to explore.

Thanks,

Pete
