File format labeling for Import / Export

The naming of export “output formats” and import “File types” assume a base knowledge and could be improved and harmonized.

Files that users may want to import have file extensions, not the file format descriptors that Gramps uses inside the GUI. We assume that users will recognized .gramps and .gpkg file extensions as being XML, family tree data, and archives of tree data plus media

Including the file extension (and being more consistent in how we label the options) would eliminate the “base knowledge” barrier.

The most common should be our Native Formats and the GEDCOM dialects.

Suggested

  • Gramps XML - family tree without media (.gramps)
  • Gramps XML Package - family tree including media (.gpkg)

Current

Export

  • Gramps XML (family tree)
  • Gramps XML Package (family tree and media)

Import

  • Gramps package (portable XML)
  • Gramps XML Family Tree
  • Gramps 2.x database

While we are on the topic of naming exports, I would like to make this (slightly adjacent) suggestion. For the exporting reports that always export with the same name, we should consider at least adding a time/date stamp so that accidental overwrites are easier to avoid.
