Early-ish Scottish Naming Conventions?

Hi all,

I’m new to genealogy, and I’ve stumbled across an ancestor whose record lists his name as “Neil ‘og’ McNeill”. He was born about 1600 AD, so ‘og’ seems pretty unlikely. I’m thinking it’s a replicated typo of ‘of’, but I don’t know if that’s legitimate, either.

Does anyone know if people back then were designated that way? It’s the only example I’ve found. The closest somewhat similar example I’m familiar with is Robert the Bruce, but that’s ‘the’, not ‘of’.

In Gaelic names, “óg” (often spelled og) means"young" or “the younger”.
