During install can Gramps pull images from multiple paths on my PC

Hello, before I install Gramps and try to import my Gedcom 5.5.1 file, could someone please tell me if Gramps has the ability during import to pull in images from three different paths on my PC? I have so many images that I have paths to folders on three harddrives. If this software does not have the ability to import from multiple locations, then there will not be a point in installing it to begin with. Thanks!

It does. You can use as many absolute paths as you like. And 1 relative path.

6.0 will also fully support media paths with URLs. (The current version allows importing URL media paths, but won’t validate editing with them. So there is a tool to collect the media files from those URLs and switchover to the local copies.)

Note that Gramps does not store media objects in its database… it just has paths to them and keeps a thumbnail collection. However, the archival backup system allow media objects to be included. Which can make for a huge .gpkg file.

Thanks for your reply! Does this mean that during Gedcom import, I can indicate all three paths to connect my images to the tree? I have 13,722 images linked in my tree attached to 4006 people, so using a tool to connect images to people will not be an option, as I have multiple people with the same name and it would be too easy to mix up files and would take forever.

It probably depends on the software generating the exported GEDCOM and how it exports the filepaths. If it is on the same computer and puts out a valid file path to the 3 devices, it seems likely that the paths will be easily resolved.

If it puts out crap or ignores local paths, then all bets are off.

Gramps is an easy install. Why not export 3 people (with media on the different paths) and see what quality of GEDCOM you’ll be dealing with?

(3 People is a small enough GEDCOM to explore with a text editor too. If the GEDCOM has weird but predictable paths, there’s a possibility that you could just do a find’n’replace BEFORE importing.)

It’s Gedcom 5.5.1 exported from FTM 2023. Also, I am not sure what is meant by “absolute” path and “relative” path. Also, find and replace is not a viable option with 4006 people on my tree.

See the Media Manager for examples of the path types.

You are thinking with too narrow of a focus for find’n’replace. It isn’t 4006 “people” paths focus, it is more likely to be 3 “device” paths focus.
