Debian repo's package Version number outdated?

gramps v6.0.? on Raspbian

Newbie at everything…….

Just installed Gramps on Linux for the first time. I thought it would be ver 6.0.7, but when I check it (via Help) it says ver 6.0.1.

Thoughts?

Which archive/repository/package manager did you use to install? It may contain an outdated version.

The Debian.org package repo for Trixie seems to be outdated… it has version 6.0.1

Forky and Sid have more current versions

It was indeed the Debian package I used.

I don’t know how to use Forky / Sid…

Is v6.0.1 safe to use?

There are a LOT of patches between 6.0.1 and 6.0.7

You can read through the bullet points on the Gramps GitHub Releases pages and decide if any are requirements for you.

But, since there is no debian download yet in the 6.0.7 assets, I’d be more inclined to download gramps_6.0.6-1_all.ubuntu-25.10.deb from the 6.0.6 assets more than the 6.0.1 version. It has been in release since November and is well exercised.

It is significantly more effort to set up and administer but…

several users have hosted Gramps Web on Raspberry Pi’s as servers on their home networks. Allowing Gramps data entry and browsing to be done with any device on that network.

I am running Debian and was able to build 6.0.7 from source (in a venv) following the instructions and it was fairly straightforward. Can’t provide further details right now as I am away from my computer.

Thanks for the offer, but it would be beyond my capabilities (I’m 74, and losing my faculties at an amazing rate ;-o

What would help a lot of people would be if the gramps site had instructions for download/install on Raspbian.

Cheers

Ver 6 of GRAMPS will only run on the latest Version of Debian Trixie and
anything prior to that you will need to use a VENV.
Apologies if you have already done this put can you put the Model of
your Raspberry Pi and Operating system details.

There’s a long list of bugs have that been fixed since 6.0.1 that I would hesitate to recommend 6.0.1 at this point. Unfortunately, I know very little about Linux variations so I’m unable to offer any suggestions on how to get a version that runs on your system.

Perhaps the first step would be to figure out who generated the 6.0.1 build and see if that person would create a new build.

Thanks for that.

I’m using Trixie (64) on a Pi 5 (8Gb)

Simplest route is then

and download the .deb package it says UBuntu but works

Phil,

Tried that - no good:

Forget last post - overcame problem, proceeding…

That’s good, I always use the built in package installer or Symantic through the Desktop and they usually sort any dependencies

phil

Phil, could you explicitly state (for this idiot) exactly how you do it?
Cheers

Open File Manager
Right Click .deb file
Choose Open With Package installer
Job usually done

For those who visit this thread trying to resolve the same problem, it would be helpful if you share what you did to overcome the problem. Thanks.

Sorry - the problem was that the “sudo dkpg …” reported dependency problems.

Donning my AI-augmented thinking cap, I read further down the webpage, where it stated ‘if you get messages about unmet dependencies’, then:

sudo apt-get -f install

That seemed to crack it - installation proceeded successfully.

I then fired up Gramps without any data - the only problem seemed be that the “Geographic” feature/add-on wasn’t working - a minor inconvenience.

Anyway, I intend to import a GED file of over 1000 people over the next few days, and see how things go.

Chase me if I do not report back to the thread (I have memory issues

Cheers
