Gramps Connect is a new HTML-based desktop and shared-hosted app. One of the things I created for it was “Gramps Connect Stories.” It is a nice way to show and tell a story involving people, places, and events.
I find it very useful on its own, so I spun it off into a stand-alone app that you can use independently. You can try it out here:
It also comes with a built-in editor for constructing stories from scratch, or tweaking those automatically created in Gramps Connect.
It is designed so that any other app can use it (like Gramps, addon under review—creates a stand-alone web page). If you save a story on the web, you can give the viewer the URL, so it is pretty easy to create a collection of stories.
I’m actively making this better, and exploring other possibilities, so please let me know if you have ideas!
I am wondering if it might fix some multiple issues when I tried to re-use some formatted data[1], which was based on an “horrible” mixed set of versions and exported via csv fields. So, they are looking for generating a better OpenData format[2].
If a modern data standard isn’t using JSON, preferably with a published schema, then it should not be considered. BTW, we love Strasbourg! And very close to the Blank homestead.
Sure, we are more like Domus project, and having json (or at least a markup language like XML) will make it more simple for a re-use. As I just contribute to it, I can just guess that OpenData via csv file format could be for filtering for students and researchers. A basic quick raw import (vs 1:1) was not so difficult, but the date parsing, the event type handling, the individual data (occupations, dates, actions, names), or the source/citation, as well as text style handling, are “poor” (a set of workarounds).
This project seems not Strasbourg-centric, and we can find some US citizen like Jimmie Durham (I do not know if it is a famous person), source like Shahram Hosseinabadi (individual), or german distant cities like Munich. There is also some other web site for Strasbourg only.
In fact, if they adopt this first stories specification into their models, it might be more easy to re-use timeline data around these bulding events, place history, sources, images, individuals and maybe textual descriptions. So, an alternate OpenData for students and researchers.
