I had to reinstall Gramps software and import my backed-up .gpkg file. All went well until I discovered the ID numbers for any new media or citations started from the beginning as in C0000 and O0000. I have downloaded the Import and Merge Tool add-on, but haven’t used it, yet. Before I do, is this the right tool with which to fix my problem?
First go to your Preferences, ID Formats tab to ensure the settings reflect previous settings.
To bring all ID into the correct format use the Reorder Gramps IDs tool (menu >> Tools >> Family Tree Processing >> Reorder Gramps IDs).
You can select which portion of the database to act on. Without the Change option selected, the tool will make sure all IDs have the desired prefix letter and pad the number with more zeros for the desired length.
Adding the Change option will re-sequence the IDs based upon when the record was created.
Don’t bother with the Start and Step options. If you change sequence to start at 0001, the next record created will be 0000 and then fill in the gaps between any steps used.
Keep is used if some of your records do not follow the Gramps style. One example is if you use the GetGOV app to fill in your Places database. These place records will have a GetGOV ID used to merge records into the existing database. You will be given the option to keep these existing IDs while the remaining records are re-sequenced.
And whenever doing a batch edit like this, there is no Undo option. Please make sure to have a backup of your tree/database. I have never had an issue with the reorder ID tool but…
Dave, I just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my post, especially with such detail. The tool and the steps you described worked perfectly. Thank you, again!
