That sounds reasonable especially if it is a one-time occurrence.
If this person is a major contributor to your work, then you may want to add the person as a Source. Add a note link to their record in the database.
The major issue doing it this way is that you cannot add a S/C directly to a note. You would have to link to a S/C in the note about “Aunt Mary” with the Source being the relative and a citation “date - email correspondence”. Or add the S/C to Aunt Mary’s record with the details in a note attached to the citation.
Another possibility is to use events to link everything. To continue with Dave’s “Aunt Mary” example, your could create events for interviews or correspondence between Aunt Mary and yourself, with both of you as people involved in the events, and sources for the interview notes or correspondence.
Thanks both. Since my interview with the source was a one time happening I have choosen to keep using my original solution. However using an ‘interview’ event and sharing it will be usefull in other cases (the multitude of lunches I had with my grandmother when I started researching, that yielded loads of info.)
A while back there was a discussion here on the forum about adding a feature to use existing People as Authors for Sources. I don’t know if there has been any further talk about this since then — maybe Brian knows more about the status. Wouldn’t this be a usable solution for this type of scenario?
Since this topic has come up again in this thread, it might be worth revisiting that earlier feature request. Allowing existing People to be linked as Authors seems like it would fit this situation very well and provide a cleaner, more consistent way to model cases where someone in the database is also the informant or creator of a source.
Perhaps this is a good opportunity to bring the idea back into discussion and see if there is renewed interest in supporting it.
Thanks for recollecting that 2021 thread. It was “Authors are people too”. Unfortunately, even with 790 views of the threads, there were a tiny number of ‘likes’ and only a smattering of responses. So it seemed like a submitting a feature request would have been a squandered effort.
It’s a feature I would definitely use…
And it really shouldn’t be a big deal to add, especially once the “new and better RSC system” with full CSL support is in place, since that system already includes Author(s) properties/attributes.
I’m still hoping to see it happen — though at the current pace…
…the odds are higher that I’ll meet my final obstacle out on gravel roads on my NX650 before this ever gets implemented…
