Implemented for Gramps v5.2
Having “Other” is a great interim solution, however it means we struggle to identify relate evidence to the person. If the person identifies as female or other, but were assigned male at birth, their birth certificate may show male, but their death certificate may show female.
Usually with names in genealogy, we put “as at birth” on records, because this makes genealogical research easier, this is particularly true of names, however we put other names in as aliases.
Ideally, we should be able to put “gender aliases” in with type “Birth”, “Preferred”, “Legally changed” etc… with dates, and the ability to set the preferred gender (as we can with names), and to set past genders as private, as this is a sensitive matter to some people.
Whatever your position on transgender, the ability to accurately represent someone to this detail is essential genealogy.
