@GeorgeWilmes This doesn’t answer your question, but if you were curious about the changelog item you quoted, here’s the [pull request](https://github.com/gramps-project/gramps/pull/1688) for it. From what I understand, it changes the check that previously prevented Gramps from running because of a missing “.git” directory in the source tarball. ---

Are there any detailed (yet simple to follow) instructions for how to run (not build and run) from source? All I could find in the wiki was an old set of instructions for running Gramps 4.0 on Windows using Python 2.7.3. ---

Do you want to run it from a git repository or unzipped tar file? ---

I would prefer the unzipped tar file, though I should eventually learn how to use git. Either way, I would write a simple shell script to do the required steps plus copy my current database, custom filters, and in files into the environment. ---

Yes, I have the tar file, just want to learn how to run from source without impacting my current install. In other words I want to treat it as a throwaway since it’s just a beta. ---
