If baptism witnesses are output in Gramps via gedcom, the following lines only appear for the person being baptized:

1 ASSO @I9999@

2 RELA Godfather

But if I add a godfather in Gramps, what happens is that I add the event of the baptism to the godfather in the role of godfather.

For me, however, no link appears in the gedcom for the godfather, only the link for the person being baptized.

The background is that I want to import a gedcom into Gramps and have this link for the godfather.

Where does this have to be in the gedcom? What does it have to be in there?
(Win11, Gramps 5.2.3)

~~Have you made the reciprocal association in Gramps?~~

~~If not use the [**Sync Associations**](https://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Addon:SyncAssociation) addon.~~

Looks like I missed that you are exporting witnesses in Gramps via GEDCOM most likely using the [GEDCOM Extensions](https://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Addon:GEDCOM_Extensions) Addon which only supports exporting the GEDCOM ( \*.GED2 ) and not importing that same GEDCOM with witnesses due to feature request [10550](https://gramps-project.org/bugs/view.php?id=10550) not having been implemented yet?

I mean the godparents not the witnesses.
That thing with the witnesses i know the problems.
THX i will test the addon.

Where does that GEDCOM come from?

It is interesting that there are 2 addon Exporters for GEDCOM ([GED2](https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Addon:GEDCOM_Extensions) and [Geneanet](https://github.com/grocanar/glopgrampsaddons/tree/main/addons-source/GedcomforGeneanet) dialects) but no example of an Importer.

However, there is an [Importer for the gwplus Geneanet format](https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Addon:GeneanetForGramps).

It seems like there would be more potential for collaborative improvement if there was a shared addon Importer too.

I create it by myself.
I have a Excel sheet whith in i can type different datas. With this i do all the entrys wich i found in a church book (baptism, marridge, death, burial) with all kind of notes, godparents and witnesses (i know the last one did not go very well with gedcom import to Gramps).
I can merge a family with all this entrys from the sheet.

Than i wrote an other Excel sheet call “mapping data” . This on need the program “GedTool” to wrote the gedcom. I can create gedcom 5.5.1 and 7.0 .
At first i must found out where is the right place for some entry in the gedcom for Gramps.
Thats was my first question.
I think this is for me the best way today (i wait for the Forms Gramplet ;- @RenTheRoot ) to put my churchbook datas into Gramps.

OK, thanks, I forgot. We discussed your sheet via mail too.

I did some further reading, and found that in GEDCOM 5.5.1, you can only use the ASSO tag at the person level, not for events. Nick mentioned that too, and it means that you can create a link from yourself to your godfather, and another one from him to yourself as a godson, and that link is not connected to any event. In other words, it’s a bond that connects you forever, and is exported as:

> 0 @I1@ INDI
> 1 NAME Fred/Jones/
> 1 ASSO @I2@
> 2 RELA Godfather

In GEDCOM 7, you can still do the same, as:

> 0 @I1@ INDI
> 1 ASSO @I2@
> 2 ROLE GODP

And this shows a small difference, because it says GODP, which is a predefined role, making it possible to show that role in your own language.

The real fun starts here though:

> 0 @I1@ INDI
> 1 ASSO @VOID@
> 2 PHRASE Mr Stockdale
> 2 ROLE OTHER
> 3 PHRASE Teacher
> 1 BAPM
> 2 DATE 1930
> 2 ASSO @I2@
> 3 ROLE CLERGY

Because with this construct, you can add the association to the BAPM event. Gramps does not support this yet, but IMO this is the way to go, because it’s the new standard, and I bet that our database already supports it.

There’s another new thing here, and that’s the possibility to add an association for a person that does not exist in your tree, using a void pointer, where the PHRASE line just gives his name.

We can’t import this yet, and GEDCOM 7 has no provision for shared events, so it’s not perfect.

Thanks Enno, you are my hero 😉
I will implement this in GedTool at the weekend. When I have a free head from work.

Ok, I test it and found out, that this part is inclouded in the export in my gedcom from Gedtool.
I only use the SyncAssociation Tool and thats is.
