I’m interested in creating a history for places (farms and houses). In Sweden each piece of land has a unique identifier (like “Vallkärra 4:12”). These ids change when the place is changed in some way. I’d like to be able to do create a historical “genealogy” for farms in a village like the hand generated one in the example. It depicts a village (“Vallkärra”) that starts of with 11 farms (“Vallkärra 1”, “Vallkärra 2”, … “Vallkärra 11”). I’ve only provided data for 1 of them, “Vallkärra 4”. I’ve been unable to tweak Gramps into doing this. Can it be done? Or is there already some other piece of software that can do that (with references between places and people)? Or must the place record in Gramps be extended and some kind of new events like split, merge, and detach for places be implemented? Possible? [Vka] (Gramps 6, Debian)

Such historical hierarchies are supported for example by GOV. And see the Domus project by @DavidMStraub. It was described here: [image] Domus house history project Genealogy You may also find some older one, which I suppose are also good clients for vector scaling (real geometrical maps on 18th!). etc.

There is a related idea, called “Stories”, in Gramps Connect, a new HTML-based app built on gramps. Currently one can automatically make stories on people and families, but someone has already requested to be able to do the same with places. [image] Here is a post about stories in Gramps Connect: [image] Gramps Connect Stories Gramps Connect One thing I do sometimes at our family reunions is to do a presentation (I’m a retired college professor, so just try to stop me). I usually pick an interesting part of our family history (like two brothers that married two sisters) and weave a tale showing pictures of ports, ships, paths, locations, and the people. I usually use something like Google Slides to present it. But I’ve been thinking about a way to do it from on top of Gramps. After all, Gramps already has all that information: even…

[image] Domus house history project Genealogy Hi, I wanted to share a new genealogy project of mine, for those who haven’t heard of it yet. The idea was born while working on Gramps Web’s map view: I’m creating places of type “building” for each house where an ancestor lived. In combination with Gramps Web’s OpenHistoricalMap layer and historical map overlays, this allows me to build little geographical time machines for my ancestors’ home towns. However, I always felt this house history research goes beyond genealogy and could profit fr…

Yet another perfect example for why Gramps should support Events on Places…
