I am attempting to create a family tree by importing my family tree [.dte file] from Doro tree. Can anyone help? i am using Version 6.0.8 win 10 ---

Moving family tree data from one application to another is done by using a GEDCOM export. So hopefully the Doro Tree application has a GEDCOM export function, typically found under the ‘File’ menu. The GEDCOM file is a pure text file, that you can read using any text editor. ---

Hi Jeff. According to the [DoroTree 2.1 User’s Guide](https://www.dorotree.com/en_qs.pdf), there is a “GEDCOM” menu option in the File menu. The first of 5 listed options is “Export… Build a GEDCOM file from your DoroTree family database” (It is likely the exported data will have some non-standard data. Writing fully standards compliant GEDCOM is a rarity.) And, like practically every other Genealogy software in the world, Gramps imports GEDCOM. I guess the question is whether you have the DoroTree software or just a `.dte` file? ---

hi: thanks for the response. Dorotree no longer works, hence I have the .dte file and I think I have an excel file with all the entries, can I import that? ---

There is a CSV import (which Excel can export)… and it is expanded when shortcoming are discovered. However, whether the data is converted through `.ged` or `.csv` , there is likely to be some data that will be skipped. I wonder if this might be an opportunity to explore whether an AI can write an import plugin for Gramps based on a sample file? Searching online indicates that the `.dte` format is ZIP compressed. (Which seems to contain a bunch of Borland database files.) Decompressing is a familiar importing step for Gramps. Our `.gramps` format is optionally compressed XML data. (In in the uncompressed form, it is plain text XML listings.) And the `.gpkg` (which includes media too) is always compressed. ---

An Excel file cannot be imported directly, but Gramps are pretty good at importing CSV files. So in Excel you must first export your data as CSV. You will need to change column names, so they fit Gramps. [MAKE A BACKUP](https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_make_a_backup) OF YOUR EXCEL FILE BEFORE ANY CHANGES ! The Gramps Manual has a description of [CSV import](https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Gramps_6.0_Wiki_Manual_-_Manage_Family_Trees:_CSV_Import_and_Export) with description of expected column names as well as some samples. ---

The easiest way to import that `.ged` file is to start with Gramps _ **not running** _. Right-click the `.ged` file and choose to open the file with Gramps. That’s _ **all** _! Gramps will automate all the preliminary manual steps that are necessary if Gramps was running. And that is not an insignificant number of steps: - from Family Trees menu, open the Family Tree Manager - click New to create a blank tree - select the new tree - click Rename to create a blank tree - give the tree a unique name - click Load to make the tree available in the GUI for editing - from Family Trees menu, select Import - browse to find the `.ged` and open it ---

The **Yahrzeit report** (and some other features) would appear to be straightforward to implement in Gramps. Perhaps you could identify other Cultural features that DoroTree had provided but are missing form Gramps? While exploring, found the [Hebcal REST APIs](https://www.hebcal.com/api-docs/). But since they prefer javascript, maybe these would be better suited to @DavidMStraub 's Gramps Web ---

thanks brian, I will do that. BTW does gramps have a standard list of categories, because dorotree has english and Hebrew, and if necessary I might be able to edit the hebrew out ---

In Gramps you can have names in multiple languages, e.g. you can have one name written in English.(latin characters) and another name in Hebrew (Aleph-Bet), so you can mix different alphabets. Gramps has been translated to several languages, but you can only run one translation. However, it is quite easy to switch between different languages. ---

@Jeff-f Could you do a “round trip” conversion ? It would give us a hint of the scale of at-risk data that is being lost during the GEDCOM trip? For your own use, you should probably import your exported GEDCOM into a new DoroTree. So if something is missing from the imported Tree in Gramps, you can look if it is also missing in the GEDCOM DoroTree. If it is missing there too, then the GEDCOM simply did not communicate that data. For development purposes, could you provide us some sample data? The DoroTree3 download includes a `dtdemo.dte` sample tree. If you could load that file, export it as GEDCOM, import that GEDCOM into a new (call it “RoundTrip”) tree. The GEDCOM and RoundTrip.dte would give us a lot more info about how much data is at risk. For example, the `dtdemo.dte` file is 87kb. And let’s say the `RoundTrip.dte` is only 80kb, that is about a 8% filesize reduction. So I’d expect about an 8% dataloss too. ---
