Dear Gramps Web users,

Gramps Web 26.11.0 almost completed the migration from the original Material 2 components to Material 3 web components. What’s left is the app drawer (main menu) and top app bar. Reimplementing those is a good oppurtunity to refresh their style.

Before working on this, I’d like to collect some user feedback. As food for thought, here are some AI-generated mockups. Please let me know which aspects you like or dislike, compared to the current design. Let’s focus on the top app bar and menu sidebar.

Version 1 - ChatGPT

Version 2 - Gemini

Version 3 - Claude

My preference: ChatGPT.

- the user should be visible at the top right corner, not at left bottom.
- Search should be prominent at the top
- statistics with icon/text/number is better than number/text
- the Menue sidebar of ChatGPT sounds more logically structured than the other two designs.

In general I’m happy with the current header and sidebar. One thing about the top bar I’d really like to keep is the color, like it has now. It’s the most visible place that the custom theme color shows up. Keeping the tree name in the bar is also nice since I have a multi-tree server.

Top right is the right spot for the account/settings but I prefer the current plain icon, not a profile picture.

I also strongly prefer search in the top bar.

Re: the sidebar, I prefer unlabeled dividers like now. Adding labels would make the menu longer and there’s no obvious groupings.

I assume that existing possibilities to configure the Home Page (like changing colour and adding an image) will be available in new versions.

The `Anniversaries` and `Recently changed` lists can be very long, so a default number of lines to be shown with an option to expand or a scroll bar, would be nice. Default number of lines should be configurable.

An option to choose between different information to be shown on the Home page (similar to the Control Panel in Gramps Desktop). Personally I would like to have the `What's Next` feature on the Home page.

The ChatGPT example is closets to v26.10, but I think the Gemini example has a better layout.
I prefer to have the family tree name in the top bar (not the page name).

Regarding dashboard customization, there is an open feature request. I’d say that’s useful independently of the navigation style changes.
