Hi everyone,

I’m currently using Gramps Web and I really appreciate the available reports and visualizations. However, I’m missing a feature similar to the _“Lines of Descendency”_ add-on available in Gramps Desktop.

**Use case**

I would like to select two persons:

- Person A (e.g. a historical figure from the 1500s)
- Person B (a present-day individual)

and generate a clear relationship path between them, such as:

```python
Person A
→ child
→ grandchild
→ ...
→ Person B
```

In other words, a direct line of descent (or more generally, the relationship path between two individuals).

### Background

In Gramps Desktop, the _Lines of Descendency_ add-on already provides this functionality very well. As far as I can see, there is currently no equivalent feature or report in Gramps Web.

### Questions

- Are there any plans to implement something similar in Gramps Web?
- Has anyone already started working on such a report or feature?
- Would it be possible to implement this via the existing API?

From a technical perspective, this seems like a graph traversal problem (finding a path between two nodes in the family tree), which should fit well with the underlying data model.

This feature would be very useful for:

- documenting descent from historical individuals
- verifying known lineage connections
- exploring relationships within larger trees

Thanks in advance for any feedback or pointers!

Best regards,
Trond Mjøs

I’d like to see this too.

You can bookmark the two people, then create a custom filter to select all of the people along the relationship path between them (using the filter rule “Relationship path between bookmarked persons”), and then use that custom filter in the Relationship Graph report. You can expand you custom filter to select other people as well (for example, spouses).

Gramps Web doesn’t support custom filters (for architectural reasons).

@trond.mjoes there is an open feature request already here: [Relationship diagram showing how two persons are related · Issue #578 · gramps-project/gramps-web · GitHub](https://github.com/gramps-project/gramps-web/issues/578)

In fact, this chart already exists in the DNA match view, so most of what’s needed is already in place.

I’m actually not sure what’s the best way to put it in Gramps Web. It doesn’t really fit in the person view, nor in the chart views.

One of these might be good for **Relationship Between** graphing:

The [Deep Connections Graph](https://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Addon:Isotammi_addons#Deep_Connections_Graph) by @kku and the [Interactive Family Tree](https://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Addon:Interactive_Family_Tree) using Topola by @PeWu already need a local server running to operate.

Perhaps they are better suited for adapting to **Gramps Web**? The local server requirement is often a deal-breaker on **Gramps _for Desktops_**

I think the Gramps Web relationship graph (which powers the aforementioned feature in the DNA view) is similar to the deep relationship gramplet. It’s also based on GraphViz.

Topola integration would be straightforward (there is an open feature request), but nobody has tackled it yet.
