Some of my people have a lot of events. And almost each event has a paired Residence event with the same date. For example:

- Census 1800-03-05 Primary
- Residence 1800-03-05 Primary Any place

or even 3 events:

- Baptism 1801-03-07 Godparent
- Residence 1801-03-07 Primary Any place
- Military Service 1801-03-07 Primary Description: soldier

As for me, each event should be appeared in a person events list only once because of really it was only one event. But I must create 2-3 events to define also residense and sometimes Military services. I think, something is missing in the events. Maybe Such things as “Rersidence” or “Military services” should not be defined as events, but something like “Custom Groups” instead? For example it could be a new “Groups” tab on a person card, where user can create a new group and add there something like events.
Or at least it would be an interesting feature have ability to group events in some custom groups directly on the Events tab. So, in this case such duplicated events as Residence will be moved to their group and will not mix with the common events.

I assume the dates in your examples are not representative of your real entries.
I hardly ever use Residence event because the Census record is the same in my eyes. Therefore I don’t have paired events (no point to it).
And a Military Service event would likely have a date range like “from 1914 to 1920”, therefore they are all unique.
Having them grouped would not work for me because I have my own way to sort them in the people view that makes visual sense to me.

I think you are finding the benefits and pitfalls of GRAMPS where
everyone comes up with their own solution
So for me I never use Residence (it is not definable) Emigration,
Immigration, Naturalisation are events but I would not define Residence
as Place A between Birth and Emigration and Place B Immigration and Death.
Military Enlistment is an Event as is Demobilisation which if you have
these dates gives you the period covered.
If like the World Wars I only know they served I will use Military
Service and a Date Range until I can revert to above.

Baptism is definitely an Event

Not sure how you have on the same date an individual acting as a
Godparent joining or leaving the Military and being recorded in any
place other than the establishment where the baptism took place or the
enlistment location.

so, godparent or witness recordings have information like this:

> a soldier of … army Jon Doe from “location here”.

As you can see, I have 3 events from this recording: Baptism, Resodence and Military service. In current case Military service is not event like living the Military. It only informs that a person is still on military service.

But I think the idea of grouping Military services was not so good, because in this case we can have one event only with dates span. I only tried to show the idea of grouping. Different researchers probably could group own elements for their research. For example, how many livestock a person had from year to year, or group frequent events of change of landowner, …

We have multiple discussions in this forum about this and/or similar features.

Personally, I call it Main-/Sub-Events and it will work a little different.
But I would also like to be able to drill down from a source or repository to a person or a group or people or a (all) place(s) that is mentioned in a source…
(this is why I use network graphs in my research)

* * *

The situation you draw here will for me be an information grouping under the citation or source, because all those dates, events, other objects or notes with information, is given from one source and one or more citations of that source.

* * *

So, I would have had a view where all objects mentioned in a source would be shown, either as a list or as a network graph or a knowledge graph view.

* * *

Today we can see all the citations from a source grouped under that source, but maybe we should have a feature to “drill down” 2-3 more hops, down to people or places mentioned in a source, with the citation as the relation or link…

Digression: Clooz 4 actually have this type of functionality or something really similar.
