Running Gramps 6.1, but have a generic question about citations. If you get a source citation from FamilySearch or Ancestry, but it’s a reference to the US Census, with an image, what is the Repository, Source and Citation?

Thanks,

My view

An example from UK

1841 Census

Repository National Archive Kew
Source 19841 England & Wales Census
Citation PRO Ref HO107, Piece 181, Book 4,Folio 10, Page 15

Ancestry & and such are not Repositories they are Publishers but there is no function like that in GRAMPS. I could use Author but I don’t probably put of laziness and the fact that the word Author has an implication of creativity about a work and Websites are not creatives.

So if you got all that from an online source, you would not have a reference to it anywhere?

I read somewhere that the concesus was to put the URL in the Volume/Page field.

Thanks for the reply,

Kevin

Do not believe there was any consensus on the topic I merely explained how I do it.

URL’s are vapourware and liable to change and vanish altogether so I avoid using them like the plague.

I was taught the citation should point directly to the source in the most concise way possible and be comprehensible to the archivist responsible for the collection.

How you acquire a copy of this information is not relevant unless of course you are breaching someone’s copyright and you intend to publish your tree.

I set the Repository to the location **I** get the information. For a U.S. census I always use Ancestry except for 1950 which I also take from FS.

For the Source, I add where the site got its information in the Publisher field.

The Citation’s Vol/Page field holds the page information; largest to smallest fact.
