I have just downloaded the Gramps 6.0xxx source code and would like to build from source.

I have also read both the INSTALL and Readme files, but since this my first try at building from source in a long while, I am having trouble making things work.

FWIW, this is on a ‘clean’ machine - no old versions of Gramps or anything else.

The INSTALL file tells me to run

_python3 setup.py build_

but it fails with “No such file or directory”

The only setup.py file in the directory tree is in ./aoi

Where is that file supposed to be ??

In the _master_ branch, we now use a `pyproject.toml` based build system.

See pull request [#2053](https://github.com/gramps-project/gramps/pull/2053) for details.

To build run:

```python
python -m build --wheel
```

To install run:

```python
pip install .
```

Thank you, but …

For my setup I have/had to use python3, but running that in the main/root gramps directory gives me:

No module named build

Try installing the `python3-build` package.

Sorry, but I have no idea how to get that done ☹

After a bit of searching, I was able, I think to re-install python3-build, but it made no difference ☹

I got the build to work after adding a couple packages it complained about..

but the

> pip install .

failed with the usual ‘externally-managed-environment ‘ error.

I think the install from source instructions have not been updated correctly in the release. So following them creates an unfortunate mess.

cheers,

brian

@Nick-Hall I installed the build package on Ubuntu 24.04.3 using `python -m pip install build` and the master branch build succeeded. The I ran Gramps using the standard `python ./Gramps.py` but I am curious about this note in the PR:

> Note: The default options will not generate local build files. They are created in a temporary directory from a source distribution install.

Since I plan to use this for development, I don’t plan to install it. Can I continue to run Gramps from the source directory, or has anything changed in the new build process?

Original thread: [Building gramps 6.0 from source under Mint](https://gramps.discourse.group/t/building-gramps-6-0-from-source-under-mint/8096)

Gramps version: 6.0.0-ffcaf4b1b

Linux: 6.14.0-29-generic (Linux Mint 22.2 Zara)

Python: 3.12.3
sqlite: 3.45.1
orjson: 3.11.5
LANG: en\_US.UTF-8

I too was able to get past this build from sources issue, and here’s my pseudo-notes for how I resolved. I hope this helps others.

1. sudo apt-get install libgirepository-2.0-dev (now a dependency for pygobject)
2. virtualenv ./venv (create python virtual environment)
3. source ./venv/activate (enter virtual environment)
4. pip install pygobject
5. python -m build --wheel .
6. python -m pip install orjson
7. pip install --no-binary=:pyicu: pyicu
8. python ./Gramps.py

There were additional dependencies required over and above the out-of-the-box Linux Mint desktop install, but those were so easy a dabbler dev like me were able to fix in one step.
